No this is more influenced by some zbrush rendering options. There's a fog option that I think makes 3d renders a bit more pleasant to look at by lightening the more distant parts.

Those mandibles are articulated if you can't see the wrinkles. They're like arms that can bend out of the way. If you see that pink area of flesh,that's loose and gathered in it's current state but the mandible can also swing down to be perpendicular to the ground. I might put together a little diagram of it's range of motion.
