Thought I'd put together a file to show the process on this one. First image is the original 2x3in oil painting I made for GenCon. Thought the colors were a bit homogenous, the figure vague and the frills were odd. For the second image I made a little sculpture for reference. This time I made an 11x17 oil painting. I originally went into the painting thinking I'd have a white background and paint the head super loose with the goal being for the image to be more about the mark making and texture and just have the eye area really rendered. Well that fell completely apart. The final image is where I returned to the illustration in photoshop and tried to add more texture and make the frills and snout a bit more like the D&D style guide. Tried to push what I began in the second image by making the skin color of the dragonborn more diverse. Tried to raise both the value and color contrast around the eye by darkening the shadows with purple and brightening the highlights with a very subtle purple.
Definitely more polished and finished looking at the final stage, although I miss some of the looser marks from the second one. Some of the unpredictability of the frills in the second one have more character and look less stiff.
I dig the purple tones you added. Nice piece.
Also ,reminds me of the old style passport photos that came as a strip.
