Deadline: October 31st

I’m looking for writing to inspire an illustration for my new book cover portfolio! This is where you come in!

Send me an excerpt from something you’ve written (specs below) along with a link to where you have publicly shared a link to this post through Facebook, twitter, tumblr, etc. I will look through the entries and choose my favorite to illustrate. I will then ask the author for the complete story or other details that may not be included in the excerpt.  From there I will create a finished illustration. File will be made at the dimensions to accommodate your cover dimensions and bleed. I will leave room and account for cover text but I will not be doing the graphic design of the logo.

The winning author will be allowed to use the illustration for any commercial purposes related to the writing including both print and electronic formats of the book. I would just retain the right to display the work and sell prints. In case of NDA’s I will not post any excerpts unless the author gives me written permission.

    ·         Submission must be e-mailed as an attachment in PDF format or Microsoft Word format no longer than 2 pages in Times New Roman, 12-point, double spaced. Please include your name or e-mail in the document somewhere and put your name in the file name. Please include “Contest Entry” as the subject line.

    ·         Entrant must include a link in their e-mail to where they have publicly shared a link to the contest. If you share on Facebook make sure the privacy is set to public otherwise I cannot confirm your sharing. Please use your personal Facebook account when sharing. The reason being that fan pages heavily limit the audience and groups are very narrow as well. I know there is incentive to share with the fewest people possible but the success of this contest determines whether I will offer this again in the future. So please spread the word to your fellow authors. EDIT:I can't believe I have to say the following but I've already seen it happen. IF I see that you deleted your qualifying share after I have confirmed your entry you will be disqualified.

    ·         Excerpt can be on any topic as long as it’s the original work of the entrant. So no fan fiction.

    ·         Entrants retain copyright on his/her submission.

    ·         Only ONE ENTRY per person.

    ·         Not following these rules will likely result in being disqualified from consideration.

Prize: One winner will be selected to have an illustration created by me based off the winner’s text.

Notification: I will announce the winner on November 15th.If I'm able to keep up with reading the entries I may announce the winner before then.

I really really really like samurais! :D

Thanks for the kind words! I really should do more samurai stuff. It's intimidating though because I know I will do it for fun and then people will come in with comments like, "that looks like an early Chinese blah blah with a later period Japanese blah blah. And the wearer looks Korean. ABSURD! Do you take me for a fool sir!?" Thanks for the devwatch!

You give the best critiques I have seen in deviant art till now. I hope I can give as good critique as you.
I saw that you have given critique to Deep Ones Under a Blood Moon. So I went ahead and said my fifty cents.
It would be great if you could take out some time to evaluate my critique and tell me how can I give better critiques.
Here's the link to my critique on the same art piece…
I hope you answer this comment :-)

Thanks. I think your critique of that piece is solid as well. I didn't even point out the clouds going behind the moon which isn't possible in reality.
So as far as advice on how to give critiques. So when I go to give a critique I often try to start with considering what the artist is trying to convey. I may have my opinion on what I think the subject is but the artist may have had something else in mind. So I need to give a critique that steers the piece to emphasize what they want and not what I want. Recently I critiqued a piece with a sea serpent and the artist could have been interested in either conveying the terrible size of the monster or on the terror it generates. Not knowing which they wanted I actually gave a critique for how they could improve the piece based on what they were going for.

I could probably improve my critique on the Deep Ones as well with this in mind. I assume he is wanting to make a scary and gross monster because of the penis. I could have suggested that he emphasize scales or the rough texture of the creature's flesh more. Add some white speculars here and there to make it look more glistening and wet. Hit shadow sides of forms with a little bit of light to make it seem more reflective.  Don't just make the eyes creepy by being bulgy. Try to add another dimension of creepy by making them an odd color or pattern. Make the mouth drooling or foaming. Make those fish lips a disturbing color. Don't just put a penis on him. Make sure it's a terrifying alien penis.  <--People love critiques like this because it's not just details about rendering but details about design that is right on target with their goals and aren't pointing out technical flaws. They're just elements that can be added to help build to whatever their goal is.

Also, always be kind and do not word anything in a way that you wouldn't want someone else talking to you similarly.
